The combat system is quite versatile due to the way charms work and how drastically they can affect your style. Not Dark Souls difficult, but challenging nonetheless in the sense that a run can end very quickly if you slip up, and things do get chaotic. It's got an old school Zelda, Castle Crashers, Cyanice and Happiness vibe to it. I've got a library full of new AAA games yet I find myself firing up this one whenever I get a chance since it came out a week or so ago. Lack of dev support and communication is disgusting. Forcing you to level your character to reach unobtainable chests is bad design, especially when you don't explain it. Boring / uninspiring progression systems. There is 0 reason to double / triple enemy hp after each boss. You can't create "builds" because the forced power increase from tier to tier means you have to change all your equipment after each boss or you don't do enough damage. Uninspiring enemy design and lack of variety. The developers don't even understand the principles of a game like this and what makes them good. When you die, it's only due to overpowered mechanics that force you to grind out character power. You never think, oh I should've gone left or right, or I should've gone with the HP buff instead of dmg. The success of your run isn't determined by your choices, because there are none. ![]() This is made worse by the fact that a lot of mechanics such as the boss' spinning attacks are almost always = instant death. It forces a lot of backtracking (especially with keys and dungeon exploration) instead of keeping the moment always pushing forwards. It's a roguelite yet it doesn't respect your time at all. Huge amount of Fundamental design flaws with this game: but it's close to being something much better.Įditing my review after extensively playing the game (mainly on console). To be clear, it's not a terrible game, and I really like playing a simple co-op action game with the kids. Again, the levels/enemies/bosses all feel way too similar to each other, making the overall game feel super repetitive. The simplest approach "dash and kite" is pretty bland, but seems way safer/more-effective than trying to time parries and what not. projectiles from off-screen enemies, getting snagged on the corner of scenery bits). Lots of the damage you take feels cheap (eg. In terms of gameplay: the game seems to work best at 2 players - 1 player would be lame, more makes the screen to crowded. but we've got mono-trash (you don't see that many charms in a run) the last couple times and I don't have the patience to try again. the one that gives you an extra dash and the one that lets you hold more meat) I think we'd probably beat the last boss. If we could get a good set of charms (eg. Whether you "have a good run" comes down to what charms you get (90%) and what weapons/armor you get at the top tier (10%) - as the weapons you get earlier are mostly irrelevant/outclassed. Overall game feels too easy/grindy/irrelevant, and it's hard to want to push through it again and again to get another try at last boss. We got some fun out of this game, but it's severely lacking in variety and needs some gameplay/balance tweaks. With the current price the game is worth every penny, and I would really like to see more content added. A non-functioning public multiplayer made for a somewhat frustrating solo experience. In conclusion, it's a fun game that was cut short due to lack of content. ![]() I'm sure all that would be a lot easier if the multi-player was working, but as a solo player I'm done with that nonsense. To top it off they don't even drop you any health hearts in-between fights. ![]() I found that upsetting and a lazy move by the devs. I finally beat Xoltun and was hoping to fight Thoth-Amon, but instead I am forced to fight shade versions of the 4 bosses from the previous zones. ![]() I had to play through it over a dozen times before making it to the end boss. The public multi-player match making does not work at all, so I was forced to play through the game solo. I'm not a big fan of rogue-like games, starting over after every death is frustrating as a player, and shows lack of resources/commitment by the devs. That being said, I am a bit disappointed in the lack of content. The music, sound and particle effects are well suited to the game. The art is pleasant and somewhat whimsical. This is a good little game, I enjoyed playing it.
